Jae Sevelius, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and professor whose research spans over two decades at the intersection of mental health, social justice, and community empowerment. As Professor of Medical Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, Dr. Sevelius has led numerous large-scale studies focused on designing and evaluating interventions to improve mental health and HIV outcomes among transgender and gender expansive communities, with expertise in community-based participatory methods.
Dr. Sevelius brings a nuanced lens to the study of relational healing and transformative therapies. Their current research explores the use of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for individuals and couples, as well as peer support models to address trauma, promote self-acceptance, and foster authentic connection in marginalized populations. They are also passionate about mentoring the next generation of socially engaged scholars, leading a postdoctoral fellowship focused on equity-informed behavioral health research.
