Healing the Epidemic of Loneliness through Connection: The Impact of Relational Life Foundation11/12/2024 Loneliness is more than just a feeling; it has become a pervasive and pressing issue impacting people of all ages and backgrounds. As Relational Life Foundation (RLF) works to combat this crisis, we see the impact that relational skills—or the lack of them—can have on our ability to connect with others. Cathy Hill, PhD, RLF’s Director of Research, explains, “The role that RLF can play in the epidemic of loneliness in our world has to do with the lack of relational skills that people have. These kinds of things don't tend to be taught in schools. Children are often spending so much time on social media that they're not learning real interaction skills with real people." This deficit becomes even more apparent as children grow into adulthood, where the absence of true relational abilities creates barriers to meaningful relationships. Dr. Hill adds, “When they get into relationships, they often have a deficit of skills. There's a lot of research showing that connectedness among human beings is incredibly helpful to all kinds of health variables. If you don't have those skills, you're going to suffer both physically health wise and mentally health wise." Through RLF’s programs, we’re addressing this skill gap by offering tools that help people not only understand their relational needs but learn practical skills to build and sustain meaningful connections.
Connection doesn’t just alleviate loneliness; it transforms lives. Solange highlights how being part of the RLF community has been a blessing and describes how RLT “is changing my life and I see my friends and my colleagues, and of course my clients changing theirs.” A Movement for Global Change This work, as RLT founder Terry Real describes, is not just a model but a movement. Katharine Petzold, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker , Certified Relational Life Therapist and RLF Research Participant, describes the relief of being backed by research, saying, “I’m really grateful that RLF is doing this research and putting effort into this because I realize that I put a lot of money and time into becoming certified in RLT because it really resonates with me personally… it would feel a lot better to know that it is a modality that works not just for me, but for the couples I’m working with, for my clients, and to be backed by research that shows that.” This commitment to research is a core part of RLF’s mission. Cathy Hill, PhD, explains the profound social impact of these skills, noting, “We are social creatures. Our brains are wired such that we do better when we're connected with other people. We’re more powerful, we’re stronger, we’re more reasonable, we have checks on our behavior." By teaching people connection skills, Relational Life Foundation empowers individuals to create healthier, more fulfilling relationships.
Changing Lives, Strengthening Communities Through RLF’s commitment to teaching these essential relational skills, we are building a foundation for deeper, healthier connections that can alleviate loneliness and strengthen the fabric of our communities. Cathy Hill, PhD, reminds us, “Without true connection skills, people tend to fall into habits of prioritizing their own needs. And our culture, our patriarchal culture, our capitalist culture encourages power-over, encourages people to find ways to get their own perceived needs met at the expense of other people.” The relational skills we teach—empathy, boundary-setting, and self-regulation—stand as antidotes to these pervasive social issues. Connection (with self and other), as Terry Real’s relationship grid illustrates, “is the center of health,” where we can hold ourselves and others in “warm regard, while at the same time maintaining boundaries that keep you both connected and protected.” The impact of RLF is unmistakable; our approach is transforming the lives of individuals, families, and communities. We invite you to join this movement—a movement that’s not only helping individuals heal from the inside out but also fostering a collective resilience that can heal society from the ground up. At Relational Life Foundation, we’re working together to make the world a place where everyone can experience the healing power of connection.
